Many of us dislike winter for many reasons: the cold, the coats, the snow, the ice, the dark. All great reasons to not love the winter season. Because of these things and more, some of us get the winter blues. The winter blues are typically defined as unmotivated, unsatisfied, or unhappy feelings that can accompany winter. So, let’s talk about how to avoid some of those “down in the dumps” feelings.
Maintain relationships with family and friends
It is so important to have regular connections with “your people”. Plan a family dinner, go to church, support local high school sports or theater, or join an exercise class. Come on people…it’s football season! What a great time to host a gathering. If getting out is difficult because of the weather, at minimum make phone contact with those you love.
Be active
You knew I was going to say this, didn’t you? Seriously, nothing helps increase mood-boosting endorphins like exercise. Find a way to move. Any movement is helpful… even if it’s just taking a lap around your living room during every commercial break.
Perform self-care
Take a long bath, read a great book, give yourself a pedicure or a facial (or even better, let someone else give you a pedicure or facial), get a massage, cook a new delicious recipe. You could even find a thrilling true crime or a motivating self-help podcast.
Organize your space
Sounds monotonous, I know but tidying up your home or even just your immediate surroundings can really make you feel more in control and like you have your stuff together. So, clean, organize, or just get rid of those shoes you haven’t worn for 3 years.
These are just a few ideas to stave off those dreaded winter blues. So, try one or try them all. The main thing is having a plan in place and following through. Before we know it, we will be through those dreaded winter months and hearing the sweet sounds of spring.
*It is important to note that the winter blues are not the same thing as seasonal affective disorder or depression. If you have severe sadness that limits your regular functioning or motivation, seek medical attention right away.
